Our fruits

The smile of the Sixaola Banana

A Sixaola Banana is something really special. That becomes obvious to anybody who once tried the soft and sweet-aromatic pulp of our fruits. Such a favorite of the gods in its yellow coat does not arise by itself in this quality and flavorful perfection.

In our bananas we invest love and a lot of work – and of course they need the paradise in which they can grow and mature to a real Sixaola Banana.

This Eden we found in the southeast of Costa Rica at the Caribbean coast, close to the place Bribri. There, the border river “Río Sixaola” runs to Panama, giving the region its name. Here you can find the perfect climate for our smiling bananas. Warm and humid, sunny and rainy, fruitful and providing a productive soil. In this region of Costa Rica, obviously beloved by the gods’, our farm is situated.

The Platanera Río Sixaola extends over 275 hectares where mainly the popular variety “Cavendish Williams” is planted. Besides it grow and flourish the biologically certified varieties “Gros Michel” and “Dátil”, our Baby Bananas, on 20 and 10 hectares.

The remaining space of our farm is part of the surrounding natural environment. An extensive farmed forest and an uncultivated secondary forest. Untouched nature on flowering and greening ecological compensation areas. Research work on testing areas, the production of humus in our „Earthworm Factory“, biological fertilizer from our “Biofactory” and timber production. And our in house carpentry for the pallets that help our Sixaola Bananas safely over the ocean.

All that belongs to our Platanera Río Sixaola – our small part of the paradise. But the protagonist, the muse and the impulse, our heart and the center of all our efforts of course is…

The golden Sixaola Banana!

Each kind of banana is different.

Sixaolas exist in three varieties

Interested in the fruity taste of our smiling and golden yellow Sixaola Bananas?

The all-purpose banana

"Cavendish Williams"

Nowadays, if you eat a banana you can usually call it a “Cavendish”. The originally southern Chinese banana variety is an all-rounder that can resist every storm with its lower plant height and calmly accepts the transport through the world. They shine golden yellow from the banana boxes in all supermarkets. And the Sixaola Cavendish is the star among its brothers and sisters.

In the name of taste, ecology and health we renounce nematicides and herbicides. We use only half the standard amount of plant protection products against diseases. We are working with biological fertilization methods, take care to use little water and cultivate the land in a soil sensitive, climate neutral and animal friendly manner. All this is done to the effect that the Sixaola Banana can develop perfectly well in an intact natural environment

Sixaola Baby Banana

"Dátil"

"Dátil" is the Spanish word for the fruit “date”. And like its cousin with the same name the Sixaola Banana “Dátil” is small, pleasantly sweet and creamy. It has a tender peel and a length of just 10 cm. A small sweet snack in between, that’s “Dátil”. Kids love its sweet taste, but adults also enjoy this special treat that is truly rich in healthy and high-quality ingredients, like every Sixaola Banana.

What makes our Sixaola Dátil special, is the complete renunciation of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The “Dátil” is cultivated using biological agricultural practices as well as water-saving, soil sensitive, climate neutral and animal friendly procedures. Our production is biologically certified - which is unique in Costa Rica. You will fall in love with our Sixaola-Baby!

Sixaola Giant Banana

"Gros Michel"

"Gros Michel", “big, fat Michael“ is a nearly lost treasure from southeast Asia. It was the most popular banana in international trade till the variety was almost completely eradicated in the early 1960s by a fungus, the “Panama Illness”.

We are proud to have the opportunity to present this tasty giant from a biologically certified production as a very special Sixaola Banana. In its cultivation we also completely renounce pesticides and chemicals. The bananas are produced with little water as well as by soil sensitive, climate neutral and animal friendly methods. Once you have tasted a Sixaola “Gros Michel” banana, you will never again look around for other beauties – apart from its smaller sister “Dátil” or the popular brother “Cavendish Williams”, of course.
